Searching For The Now
We here at Slumberland have always believed in the 7" single as the greatest medium for pop music. 7"s are cheap and portable, a great way to hear new bands without spending too much cash, and similarly a great way for bands to get their music out there without going broke. Add in a cool sleeve, maybe some color vinyl and the odd sticker or badge and you have an unbeatable little package.
The last few years have seen a real resurgence of great pop, and we find ourselves with a favorite new band almost every week. Or at least a few favorite new songs. We've puzzled over how to make more of this terrific music available, and our solution is our new split single series Searching For The Now. Our plan is to release two limited-edition split 7" singles every ten weeks or so, then compile every eight singles onto CDs to keep them available. Note that this is not a subscription series -- while we are limiting each single to one pressing, they'll be available from your favorite indie record retailers and mail orders, and of course directly from Slumberland. All singles will be pressed on color vinyl and packaged in special sleeves -- full-color, letterpress, silkscreen or something else cool.
Some bands confirmed include: The School, Eux Autres, Bright Ideas, Public Record, Strawberry Fair, Soda Fountain Rag, Brown Recluse Sings, Liechtenstein, Boyracer, The Faintest Ideas, Ladybug Transistor, Pants Yell!, Moscow Olympics, Pipas, In Interview, Strange Idols, Mytty Archer and many more. If that sounds like a pretty unbelievable line-up we couldn't agree more, and we're really excited about the amazing contributions we're receiving on an almost daily basis. Keep an eye on this page for the latest releases and news about forthcoming volumes, and do sign up for our mailing list for special pre-order offers.
The story so far …
Slumberland's popular Searching For The Now split single series continues to fire on all cylinders with this excellent UK pairing. On the a-side we find Welsh pop mavens The School, with a smashing cover of late Left Banke tune "And Suddenly." George Washington Brown creates pastoral, psychedelic power-pop, and his two songs on this split single are brand new and exclusive. Pressed on grey/black swirl vinyl.
Our Searching For The Now series continues with this excellent all-Swedish edition. The note-perfect C86 girl-pop of Liechtenstein makes a great complement for the feedback-driven buzz-pop of The Faintest Ideas on the flip. Three great songs on cream/black swirl vinyl.
The fourth entry in our Searching For The Now split single series features the racing, fuzzy pop thrills of NYC's The Pains of Being Pure At Heart and the equally adrenalized pop of Melbourne's Summer Cats. It's the US vs Australia and everyone is a winner!
Volume 3 of our ongoing split single series pairs the ambient shoegaze bliss of A Sunny Day In Glasgow (doing a Pastels cover, no less) with the mournful strum of London/Paris duo The Sunny Street. Pure pop perfection.
Washington, DC meets Hamburg, DE in the second installment in our split single series. DC is represented by the Spectorian goodness of Bye! (featuring Archie Moore from Black Tambourine/Velocity Girl), with German side of the single held down by the swoonsome pop perfection of The Happy Couple. What a combo!
Slumberland kicks off its new split single series in grand fashion with this double-header. The Company features Roy Moller and Stevie Jackson and rock an infectious brand of glam-happy 70s pop, while The Hermit Crabs will win you over with their sweet folk pop. It's an all-Glasgow show for Volume 1, and a rousing start to the series.
